Why convert JPG to PNG?

PNG is the go-to format for graphics, screenshots, logos, and images headed into an editing workflow. Converting a JPG to PNG gives you a lossless container you can re-save repeatedly without piling on more JPG compression each time — useful when a screenshot or design passes through several edits — and it fits PNG-oriented design pipelines and tools that expect PNG input.

JPG vs PNG

JPG uses lossy compression, which keeps photos small but discards some detail; PNG uses lossless compression that preserves every pixel, so a PNG is often larger than the JPG it came from. Conversion also cannot restore quality the original JPG already discarded — the PNG reproduces the decoded JPG, not the untouched original. Need a smaller photo format again? Use PNG to JPG, or shrink any image with the Image Compressor. For the web, you can also try JPG to WebP or PNG to WebP.

Will the PNG be transparent?

PNG supports transparency, but converting a JPG does not create it: a JPG holds no transparency information to recover, so the resulting PNG is fully opaque. This tool does not remove or detect backgrounds — a transparent cut-out needs dedicated background removal, not a format change.

Batch convert JPG to PNG privately

Drop multiple JPG or JPEG files at once — each is converted locally in your browser with the Canvas API and no uploads, and you can download them individually or all together as a ZIP. Afterwards you can strip embedded data with Remove Image Metadata, combine images into a document with Image to PDF, or generate a data URI with Image to Base64.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the JPG to PNG conversion free?

Yes — completely free, with no watermarks and no signup required.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your JPG files never leave your device.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Yes — drag and drop as many JPG files as you need. They will be converted and available to download individually or all at once.

Will the PNG output lose quality?

For lossless formats like PNG the output is pixel-perfect. For JPEG/WebP output a high quality setting is used to preserve visual fidelity.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. Conversion cannot restore detail the original JPG already discarded. PNG is lossless, so it faithfully preserves the decoded JPG from that point on, but it does not add back lost quality.

Will it remove the background or add transparency?

No. A JPG contains no transparency information, so the resulting PNG is fully opaque. This tool does not detect or remove backgrounds — that requires dedicated background removal.

Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?

PNG uses lossless compression while JPG is lossy, so a PNG typically stores more data and ends up larger — especially for photographs.

Does it preserve the image dimensions?

Yes. The PNG keeps the original pixel width and height of the JPG.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format — the two file extensions are interchangeable, and both are accepted here.

Does conversion preserve metadata?

No. The image is redrawn through the Canvas API, so EXIF and other metadata such as camera details are not carried into the PNG.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG?

Choose PNG for graphics, logos, screenshots, line art, and images you will edit repeatedly. Choose JPG for photographs where a smaller file matters more than perfect detail.
